Last week we stopped by Saltwater Farm Vineyard in Stonington, CT on our way to visit our friends in Massachusetts. We had never tried the wines there, so we were excited to check it out!
The place itself is very impressive. It has a gorgeous interior that’s very modern and sophisticated. Makes for a great venue 😉
Upon walking in, you are greeted with a plethora of bottles that line the walls and a cozy fireplace. It was a cold day, so the fireplace was certainly inviting!
There were three varieties of wines available that day and were very limited due to a low supply. We tried the 2012 “Golden Arc” Estate Chardonnay, 2012 Cabernet Rose, and the 2010 Cabernet Franc / Merlot blend. Much to our surprise, the Chardonnay was by far our favorite. It was not as “oaky” as most Chardonnays and had a slight touch of citrus. The Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend was our second choice, but we would have preferred the Cabernet Franc on its own.
What’s great about Saltwater Farm is that all their grapes are either grown right here in Connecticut or sourced from Long Island. So it’s truly Connecticut wines you get at Saltwater Farm! But as most wine drinkers know, Connecticut wines are hit or miss. Many are way too sweet because they are fruit-based wines. Luckily, these were not fruity wines.
Overall, we’d give Saltwater Farm’s wines a “pretty good” in comparison to other northeast wines.
