Rustic charm, a relaxed atmosphere and  upscale comfort food are what define Little Barn in Westport.  It has all of the ingredients that embody a go-to spot.  Whether you just want a Bud Light or are craving a bold red wine, Little Barn has you covered.  We spent a quintessential crisp fall night there recently and had the chance to enjoy all of what makes this place special.

After enjoying a couple robust cocktails out on the patio, we headed inside to relax by the gorgeous fireplace.  There’s nothing like sitting next to a roaring fire and having a strong drink when the weather gets cold.  Once we settled in, the parade of treats started rolling out of the kitchen.

Each appetizer had distinct character and covered many culinary styles and backgrounds.  The kale salad was perfection, the type of salad we would make ourselves.  It incorporated great elements like shaved fennel, candied pecans and well-balanced red wine vinaigrette.  For a pretty healthy salad, it was not lacking in taste.  The brussels sprouts salad had a great dose of fall flavor in it, as it combined ingredients like granny smith apples, toasted pumpkin seeds and dried cranberries.  The Ahi tuna was cooked to perfection, showing off the beautiful color that defines the Ahi.  With the jalapeño-avocado purée underneath, this dish married a slight spice with a nice hint of sweetness from the roasted pineapple.

If all of those dishes weren’t enough, our hosts brought out a sampling of their entrees that ranged from classic American comfort to German staple to Japanese noodles.  We rarely eat things like chicken pot pie or meatloaf, and now that we’ve had Little Barn’s take the bar has been set very high!  When chefs take the time to do things with love, it shows.  The meatloaf melted in your mouth and was accented beautifully with a cognac sauce.  The pot pie had expertly braised chicken stewed in a rich cream sauce.  The flaky puff pastry was crispy and light.  We also had a beer brat sandwich served on a pretzel bun that rocked a stout mustard.  I can’t get enough of that stout mustard!  The entrees were rounded out with another Ahi tuna dish that was served this time over a warm soba noodle salad with sweet soy, scallions and a touch of sriracha.

The entree round gave way to three sweet delights, which we somehow managed to fit… The brownie, pumpkin pie and cookie dough bites each offered  a nice bit of sweetness to cap off the meal.

Take a ride over to Little Barn, any day of the week is perfect for this place.  We actually think it would be best to check it out on a quieter night when you can enjoy the atmosphere and the fireplace and relax!
